07 The Grandfather Clock

It was a sad day in Jack's family when his uncle died. Everyone in the family really loved Jack's uncle.  At the reading of the will, Jack's uncle bequeathed his grandfather clock to Jack.  It was a prized valuable family heirloom and several of Jack's relatives were very jealous that Jack was to receive the clock.  One of Jack's cousins even offered Jack a large sum of money for the clock, but Jack refused.  The clock was very precious to Jack.
When Jack received the grandfather clock, he thought back to the days of his youth playing at his uncle's house, and stopping to listen to the melodious chime the clock made when it struck at the hour.  What a treasure Jack now had in his possession!  He was going to display the clock prominently in his hallway to show off to his family and friends.
However, the grandfather clock had long stopped ticking.  So Jack took his clock to a clock repair expert, who quoted him an estimate of $1000 to repair the clock. A thousand dollars!  That was just far too much money to spend on a clock, even if it is a family heirloom!  Jack sadly realized that the treasure coveted by his relatives has been ravaged by the effects of time.
Jesus encourages us to not be fixated on earthly treasures that fade with time or can be stolen from you, but rather to store for ourselves heavenly treasures. The eternal blessings we receive from maintaining a strong relationship with God will be worth far more than any material blessings we could hope to receive.
