139 Voodoo Music

Pastor Vince was a youth pastor who was mentoring a young African immigrant named Mati who came to America last year.  Mati came from a family who steeped in the tradition of African witchcraft, but Mati accepted Christ through the efforts of a missionary working in his village.

Every week, Pastor Vince would teach Mati how to speak English and also give him Bible studies.  One day, Mati burst into Pastor Vince's office in great distress.

"Pastor Vince, Pastor Vince!" Mati cried out in broken English.  "I hear Voodoo music in church!"

Voodoo music? thought Pastor Vince.  He didn't hear anything unusual.  However, Mati was so concerned and insistent that Pastor Vince followed him out of his office and into the sanctuary.

     "Listen!" cried out Mati.

Pastor Vince peered into the sanctuary and saw the praise team practicing Contemporary praise songs using new guitars and a drum set the church recently purchased.  The beat of these songs was just like the voodoo music Mati heard the witch doctors play in Africa.

We need to be careful of the music we listen to.  Music is very powerful and can debase an individual's thoughts and feelings.  Many secular songs glorify vices and can even destroy the desire for spiritual matters.  Ask Jesus to change your musical tastes so you would rather listen to more inspiring and uplifting music!
