151 Logical and Emotional Responses

Felix was working at his desk.  His young son Oliver was playing around in the living room within Felix's view.  As Felix was working, Oliver fell down and hurt himself.  He started crying out aloud.

Felix looked up from his desk and asked,"What happened Oliver?  Why did you fall?  How did you fall?  What have you learned from this?"

While Felix was asking Oliver these questions, his wife Katie heard the fall and ran out of the kitchen where she was making dinner.  She ran to him to see if Oliver was okay.  She hugged him tightly and told him to stop crying.  Oliver stifled his tears and hugged his mother tightly.

Felix, looking on, suddenly felt a pang of guilt stabbing at the side of his stomach.  He had been logically evaluating the situation, all the while his son was simply crying out for a hug.  He sat there asking questions when his wife had the appropriate emotional response.

Felix got out of his seat and walked towards his son.  Oliver saw his father and stuck both arms outstretched towards him.  Felix picked up his son in a loving embrace.

     "I'm sorry, Oliver," Felix said.

Oliver didn't reply, but he hugged his father tightly.

There are people out there crying out for God's love, grace, and mercy.  We sometimes make the mistake of spending too much time trying to figure out how they fell rather than meet them where they are and help them out.  Even if we have the truth, people will not hear unless we build a relationship with them first.  It is after we meet their needs will we have the privilege of sharing the truth.
