70 A Cry in the Rubble
A great earthquake ravaged Haiti. Jerry was one of many rescue workers who flew in to help out with the disaster relief. It was a horrific sight for Jerry to see firsthand all the destruction and death caused by the earthquake. Jerry worked hard to dig out survivors from the rubble and he comforted the sick and dying.
As Jerry took a short break to eat, he thought he heard a faint voice crying for help in the big pile of rubble near him. Jerry stopped eating and listened very carefully. Jerry turned around and asked his fellow co-workers if they heard a cry for help deep within the rubble. His fellow co-workers paused for a moment, but they told him they heard nothing. They told Jerry that maybe he was hearing things. They told him that he had worked himself to exhaustion and needed more rest. The leader in the rescue group encouraged Jerry to get some sleep.
However, Jerry couldn't shake the feeling that he did hear a cry for help. It was almost imperceptible, but Jerry thought he heard a cry for help. Jerry started digging. His co-workers thought Jerry had snapped from the stress of the situation, but Jerry ignored them.
Jerry kept digging for 48 hours alone. Just as the rescue group leader was about to finally step in and stop Jerry from digging, Jerry found a man. The man was dehydrated and barely conscious. The rescue group leader shouted out for others to help him and Jerry. They pulled the man out and rushed him to the makeshift medical ward. Jerry collapsed to the ground. Jerry was so tired, but he didn't care. It was worth it.
We are buried under a rubble of our own sins. There is no way for us to get out on our own power. Jesus is the only one who is tirelessly digging for us and looking to save us! Will you call to Him to help you?
