85 Mechanical Failure
The "check engine" light went on when Todd was driving to work. He ignored it for several days when the warning light was at yellow and orange. It's probably nothing major, he thought to himself. Even after the warning light turned red, Todd delayed in acting upon the warning. After the warning light was red for a week, Todd finally took his car to the mechanic.
The mechanic inspected the car and told Todd not to worry about his car. There was a minor problem caused by a fluctuation in the oxygen sensor. Todd was relieved that he didn't have to pay too much to have this problem fixed and felt vindicated in his procrastination. Before Todd left, the mechanic reminded him to bring the car in if the "check engine" light comes on again.
About two months later, the "check engine" light went on again. However, this time Todd decided to ignore the warning light completely. After all, Todd reasoned, he paid only a nominal fee to have his car fixed, but it took three hours of his time. Maybe later, when he had free time, he would bring the car in.
Todd never got around to bringing his car to the mechanic. He was always too busy and to do other things. A year later, his car failed the smog check. Todd became very upset and took his car to the mechanic. The mechanic confirmed that the failed the check on several levels and had many problems with it. It was going to cost Todd over a thousand dollars to do all the repairs. Todd started complaining and yelling at his mechanic, but the mechanic cut him off by simply asking, "Why didn't you bring the car to me when the 'check engine' light came on again?"
Todd fell shamefully silent. Although he was angry and upset, this was ultimately his fault. He ignored that red warning light for so long and now he is paying the price.
Are you ignoring the signs of the times?
