33 Justice, Mercy, and Grace
What are the differences between justice, mercy, and grace? Let us consider the following story with three possible outcomes:
Perry and Quicy are very good friends. Perry borrowed Quincy's car to go on a business trip. However, Perry totaled Quincy's car in a car accident just a few blocks from Quincy's house. Perry meekly goes to Quincy's house to tell him the bad news and apologize.
Justice. Quincy accepts Perry's apology, but tells Perry that he has to buy Quincy a new car to replace the one that was wrecked in the car accident. If Perry doesn't, then unfortunately, Quincy will sue him and make Perry pay every penny that he owes.
Mercy. Quincy accepts Perry's apology, but tells Perry that he doesn't have to buy Quincy a new car. Quincy will give Perry a break this time. Quincy's insurance should take care of the car.
Grace. Quincy accepts Perry's apology, but tells Perry that he doesn't have to buy Quincy a new car. Not only that, Quincy is going to take Perry to the car dealer to not only buy a new car for himself, but a new car for Perry also! Perry can't believe his ears and falls down before his friend in amazement.
We are all guilty of sin and fall short of the glory of God. Justice demands that we die as punishment for our sins. However, God in His infinite mercy has sent His only begotten Son Jesus Christ to take the punishment for our sins. By accepting Jesus as our Savior, we are saved through grace (and grace alone because no amount of good works can save us) and can have eternal life as the children of God! Amazing grace, how sweet the sound!
