The Days of Creation Lesson 05 - Sea Creatures and Winged Birds
Then God said, "Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens." So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth." So the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
--Genesis 1:20-23
What can we learn from fishes and birds? Are there any important lessons we can learn from them? These were the first thoughts I had when I read this passage. Let's find out together in this lesson.
Let's turn to Job 12:7-10.
Question 1:
- According to these verses, what important lesson can we learn from sea creatures and birds?
While fishes and birds may seem insignificant to us, remember that God gives everything meaning just by speaking it into existence. The fish in the sea and the birds in the air testify that God is the creator of all living things. Just ponder the different species of sea creatures in the ocean and the winged birds in the air. The variety of creatures is a testament to God's creativity.
God, as creator of all living things, is surely worthy of praise (Psalms 69:34)!
If we study the Bible carefully, we will find that there are plenty of lessons we can learn from sea creatures and birds.
In the story of Jonah, we find that God used a big fish to help Jonah understand the importance of preaching in Nineveh. Being in the darkness in the belly of the fish for three days was God's way of showing Jonah the spiritual darkness the people of Nineveh were living in.
Let's turn to Matthew 6:26-37 and Luke 12:6-7.
Question 2:
- According to these verses, what lesson can we learn from the birds of the air?
Birds are simple-minded creatures. They do not work, they do not save, they do not worry, yet God takes care of them. We humans, on the other hand, work, save, and worry a lot. Yet God cares even more for us!
What we learn from the fifth day of creation is that we should is that God has made every living thing, so do not worry and do not fear. In all the troubles of our lives, and in all the deepest darkest places we are, God is, too.
Food for thought:
Psalms 139:7-9 - Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me.
Romans 8:38-39 - For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Knowing that God is the creator of all things and provides for even the most insignificant little bird, will you trust in Him and not fear?
