Holy Scriptures

The Bible:

Was written by holy men and prophets inspired by the Holy Spirit and preserved by God through the centuries

  • 1 Peter 1:20-21 - 20knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
  • Psalm 12:6-7 - 6The words of the Lord are pure words, Like silver tried in a furnace of earth, Purified seven times. 7You shall keep them, O Lord, You shall preserve them from this generation forever.

Is completely inspired by God, from the book of Genesis all the way through the book of Revelation

  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 - 16All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
  • Psalm 119:160 - The entirety of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.

Can guide us in our daily lives

  • Psalm 119:105 -Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
  • Proverbs 30:5-6 - 5Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; 6in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.

Is God's eternal word spoken to us, which contains the Truth and is the only standard for Truth

  • Matthew 24:35 - Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.
  • John 17:17 - Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
  • Isaiah 8:20 - To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them
  • 1 Thessalonians 2:13 - For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.

Reveals to us that Jesus is our Savior

  • John 5:39 - You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.
  • John 6:68-69 - But Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.  Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
  • 2 Timothy 3:15 - and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Is a living document that is relevant to us today

  • Hebrews 4:12 - For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Can be understood by anyone who studies it diligently - we will discover truth if we compare scripture with scripture

  • 2 Timothy 2:15 - Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
  • Acts 17:11 - These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.
  • Isaiah 28:9-10 - 9"Whom will he teach knowledge? And whom will he make to understand the message? Those just weaned from milk? Those just drawn from the breasts? 10For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little."
